Of cats and carry ons

Posted by Metro k on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, In : News

For those of us who choose to make animals a welcome part of our homes and families vacation usually means a leisurely road trip, perhaps a stay-cation or Dog forbid a boarding kennel and all the guilt that goes with that.

Now Southwest Airlines has an alternative, the 'I can take my buddy on board fare' or 'Who's that doggy in the window seat.'

The program as one would imagine comes with many ifs, ands and wherefores but still offers the furry traveler the luxury of basic 21st century ai...

When the rains come...

Posted by Taxi dog on Thursday, September 24, 2009, In : Critter care

With two months remaining of the 2009 hurricane season and as flood waters begin to recede in the Southeast, a cautionary tale.

In the last week as hundreds have looked to the American Red Cross for shelter officials estimate the number of people needing help could still rise dramatically.

More than 220 people took refuge Monday and Tuesday in Red Cross shelters in Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. Georgia has been hit the hardest, particularly around the city of Atlanta where a...

Blue dogs, green cats what's your collar?

Posted by Metro kat on Sunday, September 20, 2009, In : Taxi dog tales

Thanks to the Humane Society and our own Dr. Kevin, For Paws now has a new old soul to keep our paws firmly on the ground. George's story is one as a beat kat on the streets I've seen too often.

George is 14 a surprising age for somebody who has lived on the streets his whole life. The fact that George survived may be because of his friend and life companion - we'll call him Jeff because HS records protect confidential personal information - who raised George from puppy hood while struggling...

Life... is a series of dogs

Posted by Taxi dog on Thursday, September 10, 2009, In : Taxi dog tales

"Life... is a series of dogs," George Carlin’s hippy-dippy take on the measure of existence never failed to bring a smile to my day; I would think back on all the dogs in my own life and realize Carlin was correct: from Buttons (my dad’s Boston Terrier) to Blondie and Iodine, Sybil – given to me as a Christmas present by Melody in college and whom later learned to call my mother ‘mom’ - Sybil, not Melody - and that dog I found in the gutter on a snowy Saturday morning outside a panc...

Compassionate veterinary hospice part II "Community Chest"

Posted by Taxi dog on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, In : Human-animal bond

In part I of this series we described the basic format and rational for veterinary hospice in this edition we’ll examine the possible roles that hospice organizations might strive to fulfill within the community.

There are basically two types of hospice, for profit business models and not for profit organizations. This simplest distinction merits some consideration because it is at this basic level that society measures its contract with any group, organization or individual.
